Guideline NT11 Stillwater & Anadrome Fly Rod

NT11 fly rods are the result of taking advantage of the very latest and most sophisticated SOA (State of Art) graphite materials used in the aerospace industry today.   When applied to and used in flyrods, some remarkable benefits are achieved. The most evident effect being an amazing recovery power and crispness in the blanks, created by combining the incredible armoring and strength increasing effects of T1100G graphite with layers of the highest modulus graphite we’ve ever used in any flyrods to date. For you as an angler, the above properties are built into a series of rods that have the lowest blank weight, yet the highest break strain of any other rod in our line up and probably also on the entire flyrod market.   You’ll find these rods to be easy to operate with their full flex medium/fast action and tips that are rigid but still sensitive enough to make them lively and fun to cast without having to focus on perfect casting stroke timing all the time. They load deeper and generate increasing amounts of power and line speed when you ask for it. While still maintaining impressive lifting power for sinking lines, this deeper, yet fast type of action will work for a wide range of casts, lines and casting styles. After many years of building premium, lightweight and strong 6-piece flyrods and knowing that no sacrifices are made in performance, strength, weight or balance, we find it only natural that this new range of rods also is multi-piece and transportable in your luggage when travelling. We have worked hard and deliberately to keep the value of these rods maximized without sacrificing quality in workmanship or components.

Guideline Stoked Fly Rod

Stoked features the latest in material patterns and production technology that let us make entry level rods at a totally game changing level. When the development process was over, we were so impressed that we just had to call them what we felt - Stoked. The Stoked series also feature many of the same eco-friendly components as the Elevation, a good incentive for the environmentally cautious angler. Compared to the Elevation these rods feature a slightly lower modulus carbon 24T/30T/36T vs. 36T/40T which make them easier to cast for the beginner and more forgiving for casting errors. Yet these are light and responsive rods with an action and feel that is associated with rods at a much higher level of performance and price. The rod action is medium fast with a sensitive and stable tip. The bend is progressive down the blank which gives you great feel and you easily connect to the rod for all types of casts.

ROD MODELS

Stoked 8'6 #4, 9' #5 & 9' #6: The 4 and 5 wt are typical all-round trout rods for dries, nymphs and lighter streamers. The 6wt is the choice for bigger flies, bigger fish and more windy conditions a great option for the lighter coastal fishing too.   Stoked 9' #7-8-9: Typical rods for the heavier fishing after migratory trout, pike, salmon, seatrout and bonefish. These rods suit rivers, lakes, coastal and flats fishing where big fish and demeaning conditions are common.   Stoked 9'6 #6-7-8: This rod length is a great compromise and a favourite among many for lake-, coast- and river usage after trout, seatrout and salmon. The slightly longer rod vs a 9ft gives better reach in the river, and height when deep wading or fishing from a boat or float tube. Due to a slightly deeper bend in the action vs the 9ft this length is easier to use for Spey casting and usage of shooting heads when river fishing. Yet, it is not as long as a 10ft rod and will be less affected by the wind when coastal fishing and has more power for these weather exposed fishing places.   Stoked 10' #6-7: These rods are the favourite length for classic lake fishing from boat and bank, they are also an excellent choice for river fishing after trout, sea trout and salmon.

Mastering the Art: Single-Handed Fly Rods at Fin & Game

Fly fishing is a pursuit that transcends simply catching fish; it’s about connecting with the water, the environment and the thrill of a delicate presentation. And for the fly fisher, the single-handed fly rod is an essential extension of their skill.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler on the River Tweed or a newcomer to the sport, selecting the perfect single-handed fly rod is paramount. At Fin & Game, our Kelso store and online shop boast a curated collection of top-quality rods from leading brands, ensuring you find the ideal tool to match your fishing style and target species.

Understanding Single-Handed Fly Rods:

Single-handed fly rods, as the name suggests, are designed for casting and with just one hand holding the rod, predominately with overhead or roll casts. They come in a variety of lengths, actions and line weights, each catering to specific fishing scenarios. Here’s a breakdown of the key factors to consider:

  • Length: Generally, shorter rods (7ft 6in to 8ft 6in) offer greater control for close-quarters fishing on smaller streams. Longer rods (9ft to 11ft) provide more line control and casting distance for open waters and larger rivers, or for specialised techniques like Euronymphing on rivers.
  • Action: The action refers to how the rod bends when casting and fighting fish. A “fast” action rod bends more in the tip, offering crisp casting, power and distance generally better suited for more experienced casters. A “medium” action rod has a more even flex, providing a balance of casting accuracy and power for a wide range of  fishing situations and applications. A “slow” action rod bends deeply throughout the blank, ideal for delicate presentations and absorbing sudden runs.
  • Line Weight: This refers, as you might expect, to the weight of the fly line which needs to be matched to any given rod’s line rating . A perfectly balanced rod and line outfit is a basic and vital part of any fly fishing set up, but one which a surprising number of anglers stumble at. Find the perfect line for any particular rod and your casting will be so much easier. You may require lighter line weights (1-3) for targeting smaller species on small streams and rivers, heavier line weights (7-9)  for larger flies on bigger waters and windy conditions, something in between, or even heavier outfits for salt water or pike fishing. No matter your casting experience, target species or fishing location we can advise on the best perfectly balanced single rod and line outfit for you.
