Trout and Grayling Fishing Nymphs
Fario Fly - Yellow Owl Cruncher
Fario Fly - Sneaky Red Quill Buzzer
The Mirage Quill series of buzzers have been extremely popular in recent years. The use of stripped peacock quills give a superb realistic segmented effect on the body of the fly. The thorax is covered with large mirage tinsel and the cheeks are made using our sunburst goose biots. As with all of our buzzers they are sealed with at least three layers of our buzzer finishing varnish to create an excellent finish. Keep these in your fly box during April-May and we're sure you'll have some great results! Fario Fly - Red Holo Quill Buzzer
This legendary quill buzzer pattern became hugely popular on the Lake of Menteith a few years ago. Used my many top competition anglers this little buzzer is a fantastic pattern to use early season. The red underneath the black and quill body gives the impression of the haemoglobin bursting through the buzzer body as it ascends to the waters surface.
Fario Fly - Natural Quill Cruncher
The Natural Quill Cruncher is a modern cruncher pattern which has gathered a huge following in recent years. Unlike a conventional cruncher which has a pheasant tail body this version has a stripped peacock quill body which undoubtably gives the most natural appearance for this fly. We recommend the use of this nymph during the summer months and has been successful on Rutland Water, Lake of Menteith and Grafham Water. We have also found it to be a popular corixia pattern when used during the months of September and October.
Fario Fly - Sunburst Diawl Bach
This Diawl Bach pattern we have found to be particularly effective for fishing in stained water thanks to the bright sunburst coloured tail and hackle. This fly is a very good top dropper whilst fishing a team of nymphs. It is also a deadly small water nymph pattern which works well in all conditions.
Fario Fly - Black and Sunburst Diawl Bach
This Diawl Bach pattern we have found to be amazingly successful during buzzer hatches. Sometimes best fished as a team of three this fly has caught the Fario Fly team more over-wintered fish than any other nymph. A very simplistic design with a slim black pheasant tail body (ribbed with black flexi-floss), black tail and hackle finished off with sunburst edge goose biot cheeks. This is a particularly "fishy" fly and one that you should have in your box.
Fario Fly - Olive and Red Holo Diawl Bach
The Olive and Red Holo Diawl Bach is a fly pattern which was born by mistake. This unusual colour combination nymph features the sombre colours of brown and olive running through the body and tail, however, with the addition of the red holographic rib and incorporation of holographic chartreuse cheeks this fly also has some bright target points. This is a particularly good nymph when fishing the washing line method for stocked fish.

Nymphs for Trout and Grayling Fishing
Having the precise flies for the job is essential when it comes to enticing those wily trout and grayling; there’s no better weapon in your arsenal than a well-chosen nymph.
Trout and grayling are predominantly insectivores, spending much of their time feeding on nymphs – the immature stages of aquatic insects – that drift or cling to the riverbed. By understanding the types of nymphs present in your local river and tailoring your selection accordingly, you’ll be well on your way to experiencing unforgettable fly fishing success.
Unveiling the World of Trout and Grayling Nymphs
The world of nymphs is vast and varied, with different species emerging throughout the year. Here are some of the most common types of nymphs you’ll encounter in UK rivers:
- Upwinged Olive Nymphs: These are a staple food source for trout and grayling. Look for realistic imitations to seriously up your fly fishing success.
- Stonefly Nymphs: These nymphs are typically larger and more robust than the majority of nymphs in a river.
- Caddis Nymphs: These nymphs often create casings around themselves.
- Midge Larvae: These tiny nymphs are a crucial food source, especially during the colder months.
Choosing the Perfect Nymph
Selecting the right nymph goes beyond just the type of insect. Here are some key factors to consider:
- Size: Match your nymph to the size of the natural insects present in the river. Trout and grayling are particularly size-conscious feeders.
- Weight: The weight of your nymph will determine how deep it fishes in the water column. Like those with tungsten beads, heavier nymphs will sink faster and reach fish feeding near the bottom. Lighter nymphs will drift through the water and imitate emerging insects.
- Colour: While exact colour matching isn’t always essential, consider natural colours like browns, olives, and blacks. Bright nymphs can be effective attractor patterns, particularly in low-light conditions.

Nymph fishing requires a subtle approach. Here are some tips to maximise your success:
- Use a good quality fly line: A sinking line or a dedicated nymphing line will help get your flies down to the feeding zone.
- Learn essential casting techniques: Techniques like the Czech nymphing or tight-line, Euro nymphing methods will allow you to present your nymphs effectively.
- Fish the water column: Experiment with different depths to find where the fish are feeding.
