Fario Fly - Bob's Bits Red
This very simple pattern is tied to represent an adult buzzer, probably one of the most consistent dry fly patterns used on English reservoirs. It was originally devised by Bob Worts and is one of the most tried and tested patterns. Today the Bob's Bits comes in many guises and it is always worth having a good selection of these in your armory. This version does not have the distinctive white wing often found in other tyings. This is because we have found our version to be particularly effective when also fished wet.

Fario Fly - Black Shuttlecock CDC
The main food source of trout are buzzers/chronomids. When buzzers ascend from the lake bed to the water surface before hatching they almost always find themselves stuck in the surface film. During this time they are very vulnerable to feeding fish and often trout gorge themselves on such easy pickings. This minimalist representation of the black buzzer performs perfectly in such conditions and is often fished best singularly to rising or cruising fish. This fly has generous amounts of wild CDC in the wing which will ensure both great float-ability and visibility. The body is varnished and finished with a flex-floss rib to give a natural looking segmentation which ensures the surface film is cut and the fly is cocked.Hook- Dry Fly Size 14-12.Wing- 4-5 plumes of Wild Premium CDC feathers.Overall length- Approx 22-24mm.Body- Black thread with brown flexi rib (varnished)International Comp legal- Yes.

The Allure of the Dry Fly
Dry fly fishing is a unique and rewarding style of fly fishing that focuses on imitating river insects that have emerged from below the surface to hatch into their adult form, or terrestrial insects that have fallen onto the water’s surface. Trout and grayling are opportunistic feeders, known to take advantage of this readily available food source. You can, therefore, entice these beautiful fish into a spectacular surface rise by presenting a fly that looks and behaves like a natural insect.
There’s a certain magic to dry fly fishing. It allows you to observe the fish actively feeding, making each rise, and take a thrilling test of your presentation skills. Mastering the art of dry fly fishing is a journey of observation, adaptation, and finesse, offering endless opportunities to learn and refine your technique.
Selecting the Perfect Dry Fly
With a vast array of dry fly patterns available, choosing the right one can seem daunting. Here are some key factors to consider:
- Matching the Hatch: The most effective dry flies mimic the insects that are currently hatching on the river. Look for flies that resemble the size, colour, and silhouette of the natural insects you observe.
- Fly Profile: Different dry flies ride differently on the water’s surface. Some, like emergers, imitate insects just breaking free from their pupal casings. Others, like attractor patterns, aim to grab the fish’s attention with vibrant colours or unique profiles. Consider the fish’s feeding behaviour when selecting a fly profile.
- Hook Size: Choose a hook size appropriate for the size of the fish you’re targeting and the insects they typically feed on. Smaller flies are ideal for delicate presentations on calm water, while larger flies can be more effective during windy conditions.

- Terrestrials: These dry flies represent land-based insects that have fallen onto the water’s surface, such as ants, beetles, and hoppers. They can be incredibly effective, especially during the warmer summer months.
- Attractor Dry Flies: When the hatch is unclear, or fish are particularly sluggish, attractor patterns with bright colours or flashy materials can entice a take.
