Trout Lures
Fario Fly - Olive Bunny Cormorant
We tie all of our cormorant flies with the tips of rabbit fur and here's why: It provides a consistent length time after time. It is more durable therefore tends not to pull out. It has loads more movement in the water. It does not look "bulky" like some cormorants tied with Marabou. We think it fishes better! The Olive version is a fantastic pattern when used in conjunction with other flies such as a FAB or Booby. We have found this fly particularly successful when fishing clear water. Beyond the Fly: The Power of Lures
While fly fishing gear often conjures images of meticulously crafted flies, lures offer a compelling alternative, particularly for beginners or anglers seeking a wider range of presentations. Trout lures act as enticing imitations of baitfish and other prey, triggering the predatory instincts of these freshwater fighters.
Lure Like a Local: Top Choices for Lure Fishing Success
- A World of Lures: There is no end of choice when it comes to point fly lures for trout. From smaller, well established patterns like Peter Ross, Butchers and Cormorants to big, in your face numbers like the ever popular Hummungus, let us help you choose the best options for the fish you want to chase.
- Jigs: Offering incredible versatility, jigs can be fished statically or retrieved with a jigging motion that aggressive fish can find irresistible.
- Streamers: Streamer fishing is becoming more and more popular in the UK and can often pull out those bigger trout in certain conditions, often after a decent lift in the river while the water is still coloured. Streamers are often tied with synthetic materials that mimic small fish or leeches, offering a realistic swimming action that entices trout .
Choosing the Right Lure: Location, Season & Species
The key to successful lure fishing lies in selecting the right tool for the job. Here are some factors to consider:
- Location: Are you fishing a fast-flowing river or a still loch? Faster currents often demand heavier lures with more movement, while lighter options excel in calmer waters.
- Season: Big trout can be very keen to feed in early spring and summer after the rigours of a winter. So they can be aggressive, on the prowl for high protein food sources. Later in the season often requires targeting fish which may be less inclined to move as much, probably holding in deeper water, so vary your tactics accordingly.
- Species: Wild trout in rivers and lochs usually require a more imitative approach while rainbow or other stocked fish in stillwaters can often be tempted by more garish patterns.
