Salmon Tube Flies: A Versatile Choice for the Discerning Angler

What are Salmon Tube Flies?

Unlike traditional salmon flies tied directly to a hook shank, tube flies feature a hollow plastic or metal tube. The fly is dressed on the tube, which the line is threaded through and a hook tied on. This offers a number of advantages:

  • Weighting Options: Tubes are made from various materials, including plastic, aluminium, copper and brass, allowing you to select the appropriate weight to get your fly down to the desired depth. Tungsten tubes are a popular choice for fast currents or deep-holding fish.
  • Durability: Ideal for fishing fast-flowing rivers and rough terrain.
  • Catch and Release: When a fish is hooked, the tube slides up the line, allowing for easier release with minimal harm to the fish.

Popular Salmon Tube Fly Patterns

  • Monkey: A flashy fly with a great profile in the water, typically with a black wing and yellow body. A go to pattern for aggressive Spring salmon.
  • Sunray Shadow: A classic pattern often featuring a silver or  white body with a red tag and black wing. Fish it fast on or just below the surface and expect some explosive action
  • Snaelda: A popular Icelandic pattern the Snaelda is another proven fish killer. Particularly effective fished deep.
